General information

Modern ecological sampling is often based on both descriptive and nondestructive techniques which employ photographs and video recording. Images describing organisms and their natural habitat represent qualitative and, in some cases, quantitative data essential for characterizing and monitoring the coastal marine environment.

An informatic system which permits one to digitize, classify, archive and retrieve a great amount of images has been set up: it could be seen as a useful tool for either popularization or research aims.
